Irma Lerma Rangel witnessed intolerance growing up in Kingsville, Texas. Irma became a pioneer for Mexican American rights and a champion of education. She studied to become a teacher and then a lawyer. She became the first Mexican-American woman to be elected to the Texas House of Representatives. As a legislator, she was an avid supporter of education, which she saw as the path out of poverty.
