Columbia Family to Star as “Real Life” Book Characters at Upcoming Book Festival!
(COLUMBIA, SC)—Judy Cotchett Smith is sitting at her desk at Palmetto Health, where she heads its Corporate Communications division, when she gets a shocking
phone call from her daughter. “Mom, I don’t know how to tell you this, but you are a worried grandmother, I am a spy, your grandchildren are involved
in international intrigue, and we are all in mortal danger!”
What’s the story behind this? Exactly that—a story: The Mystery at Fort Sumter by award-winning author Carole Marsh. The Mystery at Fort Sumter, along with all other titles included in America’s National Mystery Book Series Real Kids! Real Places! as are set in real
locations and use real children (and sometimes, their parent and grandparent)
as characters and appeal to all readers ages 7-14.
“It’s been quite a ride and the book has just come out!” says Paige Muh. “My girls are so excited about being characters in a book! They enjoyed the photo shoot for the book’s pictures, and their “Top Secret” preview of the story, and can’t wait to be asked to autograph something—the book, anything!”
Marsh, who lived in Greenville for several years, wrote this book in her home in
Savannah, Georgia. “The 150th anniversary of the Civil War is coming up,” says Marsh, “and so I really wanted to do a mystery that featured Fort Sumter and Charleston. I was writing during the winter more than a year ago, and so set the mystery
during a rare blizzard, which really adds to the fun. Because I’ve spent so much time in South Carolina and love its history, this is a really
special book for me that just called for special characters, in addition to
Christina and Grant, my own grandchildren, who appear in other Real Kids! Real
Places! titles.”
Marsh’s books are popular with parents, teachers, and librarians because they share
historic facts cleverly couched in a rousing adventure. Reading the Carole Marsh Mysteries aloud in class, then going on a field trip
to the locations mentioned has been popular with students and teachers alike
for years, and the same is expected to keep the highways hot between Columbia
and Charleston with this new title. “We can hardly keep the books on the shelves,” agree local booksellers and librarians.
The Mystery at Fort Sumter is just one of six new Carole Marsh Mysteries that
have just been released. The others include The Mystery on the Great Lakes, The Mystery in Hawaii, The Mystery at Mount Vernon, The Mystery on the Oregon Trail and The Mystery at Yellowstone National Park.
The South Carolina Book Festival will be held February 27 and 28, 2010 at the
Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center where Paige Muh, her daughters, Anna
Muh and Rebecca Muh, as well as Judy Smith, their mother and grandmother will
be featured. “We’ll be the ones smiling really big!” says Paige. “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see your children be real characters in a
book! I’m sure they’ll one day read the book with their own children and grandchildren, but of
course, right now all they want to do is go to Charleston and see where they ‘starred’ in the book!”
All Carole Marsh Mysteries are on the Accelerated Reader program and include a
Teacher’s Guide, which offers even more educational facts, activities, recipes, and
insider information from the author, which adds to their popularity among
parents and teachers. The author is now working on a Civil War series for children, to be released
early this summer. Books are available at local booksellers and libraries. For more information please contact Gallopade International at 800-536-2438 or
