EDITOR: THIS RELEASE HAS BEEN SENT TO YOU IN RESPONSE TO THE RECENT NEWS HEADLINES REGARDING UPTICK IN TEEN PREGNANCY AND REPORT ON SEXUALITY.

Start Sex Ed When Kids are Young, Author Insists. Waiting ‘til Teens is Sure Recipe for Failure

(PEACHTREE CITY, GA)—“We are sexual beings before we are born,” says Carole Marsh, noted sex education author and CEO of Gallopade International, a children’s educational publishing company.  For the last 30 years her claim has been to start sex education shortly after a child is born.

“I’m pretty disgusted,” says Marsh from her office in quaint Peachtree City, Georgia, “Every year, the ‘shocking’ news headlines are the same: More Teen Pregnancy, Oh, What to Do? Truly, the ’what do to’ answer has been there all the time, but we keep expecting to do the same old thing, have the same old arguments, but expect better results. Obviously, that isn’t working.”

Marsh, the author of Smart Sex Stuff for Kids 7-17, in print since 1979, as well as many other sex ed books for children and parents has always insisted that a specific three-pronged approach has the best chance to give any child a head start toward their “lifetime of sexuality.”

“Go first!” Marsh encourages parents. “When you are expecting your child, go ahead and begin to collect sex education materials and inform yourself as well as get comfortable with sex words.  It will be no time before you have to either say the real body part word, or something silly—a real early deal breaker in sex ed success.”

“Second,” says the author, “start young. If a child of any age has a question, they deserve an answer. It’s easy when they are young; answers should be simple but precise. Kids learn young that it’s OK to talk about sex and that you are the source of good answers and information.”

“Lastly,” the author insists, “Get over this abstinence versus contraception information argument!”  Marsh’s Smart Sex Stuff for Kids includes chapters “Abstinence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder” as well as “I Con if You Condom.”

“Information is power, as we know,” says Marsh, mother of two and grandmother of five, ages toddler to teen. “Your girl or boy will face constant choices and it’s the early comfort with sexuality discussions, the confidence of the information and the early establishment of all the best options that are the three keys to helping kids make the right choices. Parents have no control over the choice,” adds Marsh, “but they have all the control over responsible sex ed for their kids. Abstaining from that is what the problem is, and thus another statistic, another baby, another headline is born—and we all wonder why.”
