Small Town Making Big Difference in Census Awareness
(BATESVILLE, IN)—With so many reluctantly anticipating the upcoming census counting, one small city in Indiana has stepped up to the plate and are taking some fun and simple steps to encourage their citizens to get involved.
When Batesville Primary School third grade teacher Teri Fledderman came across Gallopade International’s new 2010 Classroom Census Kit she felt it would be an effective tool to help educate her students about the census process. When it arrived, the bright, eye-catching poster of a gumball machine representing our country's diversity, gave her husband, Mayor Rick Fledderman, an idea—the result? Sixty fun and creative census posters placed around town reminding citizens of the upcoming census counting.
“We plan to place these at key locations in the community. The poster is very eye-catching and relates well to the overall population, which we hope shows a healthy increase based on the 2010 census,” says Mayor Fledderman.
The 2010 Census Classroom Kit is not only educational, but is entertaining as well and provides children with a sense of ownership and belonging in the census process. Kids laugh and drop their census forms into the colorful box as they proudly display their “I Count” stickers. “We are excited about conducting a student-friendly census for Batesville grades K-5,” says Teri Fledderman. “We used the poster to center a bulletin board theme and put pictures of our students on large, round colorful circles (gumballs!) and added speech bubbles like “I want to be counted to help with school funding!” “Count me, please count me!’&rdquo
