Promoted to Deputy Assistant to President Ford in 1974.

Elected as Congressman to the U.S. House of Representative from Wyoming for five consecutive terms.
From 1981 to 1987, served as Chairman of the Republican Policy Committee.
Elected Chairman of the House of Republican Conference in 1987.
Elected as House Minority Whip in 1988.
Accomplishments
At 34, he was the youngest person to become Chief of Staff.
As Secretary of the State from 1989 to 1993, he directed the largest military campaigns in recent years, and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his leadership during this difficult time in American history.
